These soft, fluffy pizza buns are everything you love about pizza - rolled up into a warm, handheld bite. A simple homemade dough is slathered with tangy pizza sauce, sprinkled with gooey cheese, and your favourite toppings before being rolled, sliced, and baked to golden perfection. Each bun has crispy edges, a cheesy top, and a soft, flavour-packed centre. Perfect for lunchboxes, party snacks, or cozy weekend treats. Prep time: 2 hours

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 tsp)

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • ¾ cup milk

  • 1/2 cup melted salted butter

  • 1 egg, at room temperature

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 2 1/2 cups + 2 tbsp plain flour

  • 1 tsp dried oregano


Filling

  • 200g pizza sauce

  • 3 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese

  • 1 teaspoon origano

Method

To Make the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer), mix together the sugar and yeast.

  2. Warm the milk to around 110°F (just warmer than body temperature), then pour it over the sugar and yeast. Whisk gently and cover with a cloth. Let it sit for 5 minutes, it should become foamy on top.

  3. Add the remaining dough ingredients. If using a stand mixer, attach the dough hook and mix on medium-high for 7-10 minutes. If the dough is too soft, add a little more flour and mix for another minute. To see if the dough is ready do a test by taking a small piece of dough, stretching it with your fingers and holding it up to a window, it should be thin enough to see light coming through without tearing.

    • If kneading by hand, bring the dough together and knead for 10 minutes. Lightly greasing your hands helps reduce stickiness. Add flour 1 tablespoon at a time if the dough feels too soft.

  4. Lightly grease the bowl, place the dough in the centre, cover with a towel. Leave it in a warm spot (I use the microwave, turned off!).

  5. After 1 hour, check if the dough has doubled in size. If not, leave it for another 30 minutes.



To Create the Bread

  1. Prepare a baking tray with parchment paper.

  2. Punch down the dough to release air. Flour the surface, shape the dough into a ball, then roll out into a rectangle that’s 5mm thick

  3. Spread the pizza sauce over the top until evenly spread Sprinkle 1/2 cups of cheese and add any other toppings you wish.

  4. Roll the dough like a cinnamon roll to form a long log.

  5. Cut 1 1/2 inch slices and place them flat onto the baking tray. Take the end of each slice and tuck it under the roll.

  6. Sprinkle the buns with cheese and oregano.

  7. Cover with a towel and let it rest for 20 minutes.

  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown.
